Adam Savage reveals his real reason for returning to MythBusters – CNET

Mythbusters was/is one of those TV shows that kept me tuned in for all 15 seasons. So my head hung low when I heard the news about the show coming to an end. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel- Savage is hosting/producing Mythbusters, Jr, wich airs sometime later this year. I’m very interested to see how they pull off the show with kids as the hosts and busting or confirming the myth at hand.

There really is nothing like Mythbusters to replace it with. Yes, Discovery channel did bring the show back with two new hosts, but it wasn’t the same. It was/had a weird vibe to it. Jamie Hyneman kinda fell off the radar after the show ended; his dislike of the media/filming is well documented, so it’s not a big surprise that he is out of the spotlight. But Savage stayed in the media.

He does TED talks-his 1st was about his love for cosplay. His love of space, space suits, and science in general brings him to panels and talks about those topics. He interviews astronauts! A few years ago Savage (along with Hyneman at the time) hooked up with the website Tested where he does a weekly podcast, ‘one day builds’ video’s where he builds things like movie prop replicas (he’s made about 4 versions of Han Solo’s DL-44 blaster and Deckards pistol from Blade Runner), his costumes for the conventions he goes to, and modified Nerf guns. Needless to say he’s been busy, and has been getting it all down on video and audio.

Discovery obviously wanted to bring Mythbusters back with the original cast, but it wasn’t to be. Now that we’re two years past the last epic episode airing, Savage is back with Mythbusters– sorta. Instead of Savage busting myths, a band of Junior Mythbusters will be the ones building contraptions and (hopefully) blowing things up. Savage will act like/as a mentor or guide to these new Mythbusters. But why return to the show now?

It was the word “junior” that got him excited about putting the safety goggles back on.

“I stayed away from the initial reboot of MythBusters, specifically because after 14 years, 40 plus weeks a year, I was sort of happy to take some time off from making the show,” Savage said Thursday at the MythBusters Jr. panel presentation at the Television Critics Association.

“I’ve also turned 51 and my kids left the house, an empty nest,” Savage continued. “And all of that is part of realizing that it’s time for me to start passing on everything to the next generation. Everything I know needs to move out to the world.”

And that’s exactly what Savage says he hopes will happen with his young co-stars on MythBusters Jr.
