Lucasfilm Has Reportedly Ceased Development Of All ‘Star Wars Story’ Spinoffs After ‘Solo’

Well it appears as though the shit fest that is Solo: A Star Wars Story may be having some negative (or is it positive) effects within Lucasfilm & Disney. There’s a rumour going around saying that all internal development of stand alone Star Wars movies have been stopped.

To date Solo has made 339.6 million worldwide over the l6 four weeks. Experts are predicting a $50-80 million loss for Disney when all is said and done. This is a bad thing because stand alone movies like the long hoped for Obi-Wan Kenobi movie (with Ewan MacGregor) may not get made.

It’s also bad because it continues the trend of Lucasfilm and Disney having ‘creative differences’ with directions on basically ALL of their movies. To be fair to Solo it was 2 very different movies slapped together, so it was going to suck no matter what. To be hard on Lucasfilm and Disney, they should have pushed back the release date for the movie to make it better instead of sticking to an arbitrary release date.

Now there may be a silver lining in all of this. First this means that there are more resources available to Episode IX, and the planned trilogy by Rian Johnson. Also still on track is the mysterious film series being developed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of ‘Game of Thrones’ fame.

Solo’s flop may also be helpful in other ways. It could mean that stories, scripts, and overall concepts are looked at in greater detail and precision. It might also mean that Lucasfilm and Disney really talk with directors and meet with them to make sure that both sides are on the same page.

A new, deeper focus on hiring the right director means that everything and everyone understands what is wanted. People know what the goals are, and how things are going to be done. Solo can’t be taken back, but it can be a learning point where things changed for the better after.
